If you haven’t noticed, cold weather seems to be the theme this week. We’re definitely in the “dead” of winter, as we so-lovingly call it, and in the Midwest, that means harsh temps & a bit of cabin fever. Although, January seems to be disappearing like 2017 did, so we’re on the up and up towards spring. Not that I ever wish for spring – I love this white stuff. Negative temperatures, not so much, but I’ll take it if it means the snow stays. Back to the cabin fever issue… aren’t we all ready for some outdoor adventure? And if so, aren’t we ready to wear something other than yoga pants & UGG boots? (raising my hand) That’s why we need to figure out how to fashionably layer for cold weather. Outfits to keep us warm but also appropriate for outings.
Here’s what I came up with…
…and that actually worked! One of those soft flannel button-ups, layered under a fuzzy wool turtleneck sweater & a jacket to top it off. Comfort comes from the soft flannel base and the warmth sealed in with thick wool and a thin outer layer. Oh, and don’t forget your pom hat! A necessity in my winter wardrobe. Honestly, we trekked around these woods for a couple hours and besides my absence of gloves, I stayed warm and toasty. For the record, I was a bit skeptical, not convinced this would be warm enough. And if it was negative degrees like this week, I would have absolutely needed my never-fail Patagonia coat as a top layer, but it was perfect for a mild winter day.
I’m all about winter fashion, so that’s where my enthusiasm originates with outfits such as this. I tend to keep things more casual, even for a night out, and layers bring an added detail to a rather simple ensemble. Appropriate for winter hiking, a weekend lunch date, local winter games or simply shopping around town.
